Digital Content Creators

Mission

The Digital Content Creator Program equips students with the skills to create compelling social media content that advances civic learning and democratic participation. Through hands-on content creation, collaboration, and strategic storytelling, participants produce engaging, research-informed content that reaches young audiences while developing the skills to become thoughtful, effective communicators in the evolving digital landscape.

Program Overview

The Digital Content Creator Internship is a paid, credit-eligible experiential learning program that equips students with the skills to create compelling digital content that inspires young people to become active, informed democratic citizens through:

  • Developing engaging, platform-specific social media content focused on democracy, civic engagement, and public affairs
  • Translating complex political and civic topics into accessible, accurate, and engaging digital storytelling
  • Collaborating with peers and staff to produce, test, and refine content strategies that reach and resonate with Gen Z audiences

Selected students work 8–10 hours per week in a hybrid arrangement, earning $17.00 per hour. Students may also earn academic credit through their department, where applicable.

    • Must be a current undergraduate student at Rutgers University in good academic standing 
    • Must be able to work 8-10 hours per week in a hybrid arrangement
    • Must be able to attend weekly in-person meetings and events at Rutgers-New Brunswick
    • Must have experience creating social media content, including video creation and editing 
    • Must have experience with major social media platforms and basic content creation tools, including Canva and CapCut
    • Must have strong written and oral communication skills, attention to detail, and understanding of branding guidelines
    • Creating eye-catching, viral-worthy content for our social media channels to promote youth voter turnout, political awareness, and civic engagement.
    • Conducting interviews with current students, faculty, staff, and community members. 
    • Researching social media trends and news to pitch timely and creative ways to connect civic content with online trends to reach wider audiences.
    • Collaborating with a team of interns to brainstorm content ideas and strategy to achieve broader engagement.

    To apply, you must fill out the online application. Completed applications must include your current resume and a short TikTok video (30 seconds or less) highlighting your creativity and interest in civic engagement. Choose from the following video prompts:

    1. Use a trending TikTok sound, format, or meme to deliver a civic message or raise awareness about an issue Gen Z should care about (e.g., media & news literacy, low voter turnout, youth representation in political leadership, etc.)
    2. Explain why voting matters to you and how you would encourage others to get involved.
    3. Show (or narrate) what it looks like to be an engaged citizen beyond just voting, such as attending a town hall, helping a neighbor, or volunteering.
