RU Ready
Mission
RU Ready is civic education initiative providing high school and middle school students with the motivation and the civic, political, and expressive tools they need to address public problems in their community.
Program Overview
The RU Ready Internship is a paid, credit-eligible experiential learning program that equips students with the skills to foster civic engagement through four facets in high schools and middle schools across the state of New Jersey.
Students will create informative resources on Getting Political, Speaking Out, Paying Attention, and Volunteering Your Time.
Selected students will work 5-7 hours per week earning $17.00 per hour. Students may also earn academic credit through their department, where applicable.
Eligibility

- Must be a current Rutgers University–New Brunswick sophomore or above
- Must be available to attend weekly in-person events both on-campus and off-campus *Students will be reimbursed for travel costs*
- In order to work with minors in a school setting, interns must be able to pass a background check, fingerprinting, and TB test
- Interest in encouraging young adults in civic skill building
- Ability to speak to large groups of students
- Access to a car a plus, but not required
- Ability to work 5-7 hours per week in an in-person arrangement; some work may take place at home

- Must be a current Rutgers University–New Brunswick undergraduate student with a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Must take this course in the spring to participate in RU Ready
- Must be able to travel to partner schools *Students will be reimbursed for travel costs*
- Interest in encouraging civic skill-building in young people
- Ability to speak to large groups of students

- Comprehensive public middle school or high school in New Jersey, with an emphasis on districts serving historically underrepresented communities
- Within relative proximity to Rutgers University–New Brunswick campus
- Schools located more than 45-minutes away from campus will be considered on a case-by-case basis

Responsibilities

- Implement RU Ready Civics Fairs at area high schools and middle schools
- Create informative resources for students (Elected Officials Guides, Volunteer Pamphlets, Tri-Boards, etc.)
- Lead and facilitate two in-person RU Ready Young Leaders Conferences for high school students
- Participate in weekly internship meeting with Center staff

- Assist members of the RU Ready team by attending Civics Fairs and Young Leaders Conferences
- Develop leadership & presentation skills by facilitating civic engagement stations and projects
- Become involved in invitation-only Eagleton Institute of Politics events and programs
- Earn 1.5 credits from successful completion
